Page 3. William the Conqueror enters and kneels in prayer at front of stage.

William the Conqueror

Almighty God

My task is great

To make the English appreciate

The benefits of the French state.

I have packed my ships with beaucoup fromage

I’m not sure what to charge

There’s baguettes and wine

Which is just fine,

But just suppose the sea is rough

or the English call my bluff?

I ask you to guide my ships

Safe to shore

Then I’ll kneel again and ask for more.

Chorus. In the spring before William came

Appeared in the heavens

A portent

A flame

A long haired star

So clear and bright

There was no difference

Between day and night ,

Halley’s Comet

Shone all week

A sign for William

To send his fleet
